Obituary

Walter Lee Dennis Grice fell asleep in the Lord in the early morning hours of November 29, 2024 after a brutally long battle with non-alcoholic cirrhosis. He was 71 years old.

Walt was born on April 4, 1953 to William and Minnie Grice in Sabetha, Kansas. He was the oldest of 3 siblings. During Walt's childhood his family moved across the southwest following work; farming, harvesting, and dairy jobs. Before Walt was 12 yr old he began working for his dad to help provide for the family. Walt told his family stories about his life from Kansas to California to Texas and beyond. Some hilarious and some sad. He always seemed to understand that although his childhood was not typical, it taught him the lessons needed to be a great man.

His first daughter, Melinda G. Schimberg, was born to him on June 26, 1973. She was the apple of his eye until the day he died.

Walt worked hard his entire life. He was a Logger in Oregon, a Welder in Texas, a farm hand in many states, and eventually retired from General Motors in Shreveport. But of all those "jobs", the one he was most proud of was the Army. In the Army Walt's job was "Infantry 2 Drill Sergeant"; he focused on shaping his new recruits on infantry skills and tactics needed for ground combat. Walt was responsible for leading, mentoring, and disciplining his trainees to become effective infantry soldiers. He truly made his mark on the world through the Army.

On February 10, 1978 Walt married Julie after a short time together. They simply fell in love. It was not easy but choosing to love each other every single day gave them a great life together! They're marriage is one to admire; through every challenge, every joy, every blessing, and every failure they continued to choose each other. In their 46 years of marriage they had two children together. Daniel (Boone) Grice and Laura Collins. Walt and Julie were blessed by God for each of those 46 years. Until the very end he would wink at her when he thought no one was looking and his last words to her were "I love you".

Walt is survived by his loving wife, Julia; their three children, Melinda, Laura, and Daniel (aka Boone); sons-in-law, Jimmy and Steve; daughter-in-law, Patience; as well as 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. To say his life was full of love and family is an understatement. Walt's legacy is one of strength, love, and unwavering faith. He built a foundation for his family based on hard work, joy, deep love, forgiveness, loyalty, courage, and steadfast devotion to what is right—all centered on keeping their eyes on Jesus. May his memory and the values he instilled live on through generations to come.
