Obituary

Sharon Ann DeCarlo, a devoted mathematics teacher, residing in Shreveport, La. died on February 24, 2023 at the age of 73.  She is survived by her only sister, Karen DeCarlo O'Connell (Pete) of Slidell, La; her nieces, Rachel Lapworth Davis (Chris), Erin O'Connell Yeargin (Jeric), and Colleen O'Connell; her great nieces, Taylor Bufkin and Olivia Davis; her great nephews, Bryce Yeargin, Graysen Yeargin, and Cayden Schiro;  her beloved fur babies, Luka and Waffles; and many dear friends.

Sharon was born in New Orleans, La. on August 12, 1949 to James R. DeCarlo and Rita Bouche DeCarlo.  She is a 1967 graduate of St. Joseph Academy; received a B.A. in Mathematics in 1971 and M.S. in Mathematics in 1973 from University of New Orleans; Masters +30 in 1998.

Sharon's teaching career began in 1971 as a UNO graduate assistant, then on to Ecole Classique New Orleans 1974-1976.  After relocating to Shreveport, she continued as a dedicated educator at Linear Junior High (1976-1977), Midway Middle School (1977-1978), Northwood Jr.- Sr. High (1978-1987), C. E. Byrd High School (1988-1992), and Bossier Parish Community College until her retirement in 2010.

She was a loyal volunteer for 13 ½ years at Robinson's Rescue where Waffles chose Sharon to be her forever mom.  As was so eloquently written by their staff, "She was the heart of our team. She was also a friend, sister, auntie, listener, teacher, advisor, encourager, and partner in trying to make the world better for all."  Carley's Angels, another rescue Sharon held close to her heart, united her with sweet Luka.

She enjoyed traveling and hiking through many national parks.  Her international travels included Italy, the homeland of her paternal grandparents, and most recently, Ireland.  An avid reader, Sharon also filled her time with knitting and crocheting.

A celebration of life will take place at a later date.  In lieu of  flowers, friends may make memorial contributions to Robinsons Rescue, 2515 Line Avenue, Shreveport, LA 71104 (robinsonsrescue.org) or Carley's Angels, carleysangelsrescue.org (contact email: carleysangels 2019@yahoo.com)
