Obituary

Sandra Sue Nunnally was born on December 29, 1942 in Springhill, Louisiana to J.Q. and Mary Nunnally. She passed away on October 29. 2026 in Shreveport, Louisiana. She graduated from Springhill High School and went on to attend The University of Arkansas. She changed her career path when she left The University of Arkansas to attend American Airlines Stewardess College and upon graduation began her life-long career with American Airlines. Sandra, also known as “Susie”, lived an amazing life of hard work, travel, adventure, and charitable works.

During her career with American Airlines, Susie lived in many places including Dallas, Little Rock, Richmond, New York City, and Hartford Connecticut before retiring and moving to Shreveport, Louisiana to be closer to her family. She began her airline career in the cabin as a flight attendant before advancing through the ranks to a corporate management role.

Some of Susie’s most notable accomplishments were in her church and charitable activities: Susie was a faithful and active member in her church community at First Presbyterian Church in Shreveport. She served in many capacities in the church. She was a deacon, an usher, a church school member, she participated in a mission trip to Guatemala, and belonged to a Women’s Church Circle. Susie, with her long-time partner Bob Thompson, founded the Neighbors to Neighbors organization in 2005, and in partnership with the Volunteers Of America (VOA), supported the Lighthouse program which raised over $500,000 for program participants. These funds provided diapers, laptops, snacks, school uniforms, and holiday dinners. Susie also served on the board for the Volunteers of America and chaired the Author’s in April annual Pioneer Heritage Center event.

Susie was preceded in death by her parents J. Q. and Mary Nunnally, her sister Rose Marie Wakeman, and her brother-in-law William Wakeman. She is survived by her niece Laura Chemell (Marty), three great-nephews, William Chemell (Grace), Bradley Austin, and Wakeman Chemell, as well as her cousins and many friends. She was a trailblazer and a strong and independent woman.

Her memorial service will be held on November 13th at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Shreveport. Reception to follow in the dining room. The family would like to thank the Chateau’s at Montclair staff, as well as Serenity’s Heart caregivers for their kindness, compassion, and care. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to the Volunteers of America (VOA) (https://voanorthla.org/) or The Bridge Alzheimer’s & Dementia Resource Center of Shreveport (851 Olive St, Shreveport, LA 71104).
