Roy S. Freeman, Jr. was born on December 10, 1930, in North Little Rock, Arkansas, to Lola Warner and Roy S. Freeman, Sr. He passed away due to complications from a sudden illness on August 24, 2020, at Intensive Specialty Hospitals in Bossier City, LA.
Roy was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Joyce H. Freeman, as well as his parents, and two sisters, Gladys McIlveene and Nellie Bowman. He is survived by his son, Michael K. Freeman, his daughter, Kimberly G. Freeman, both of Shreveport, LA, a nephew, Jerry McIlveene of Denham Springs, LA, a niece, Alice Ross of El Dorado, AR, a sister-in-law, Estell Branch of Teneha, TX, a brother-in-law, Jim Dawson of Waxahachie, TX, and several great-nieces.
After graduating from high school, Roy joined the United States Navy, where he served our country during the Korean War. He worked on aircraft (helicopters) and was assigned to the USS Philippine Sea, and received several medals during his time with the United States Navy, before being honorably discharged. After his military service, Roy went to college and graduated from the Junior College of Little Rock University, in Little Rock, AR, majoring in Chemistry. Upon completion of college, Roy began his career in retail with the Nunn Bush Shoe Company, in North Little Rock, AR, and was with this company for 38 years. During this time, he opened Freeman's Nunn Bush Shoe Store in downtown Shreveport. After retiring, he opened Roy's Shoes, in Minden, LA. He was also the owner of family shoe stores in Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana, throughout his career in retail.
Roy was a very kind and loving husband, father, uncle, and friend. He never met a stranger and touched many lives with his kindness and his generous nature. He was an excellent salesman and very successful throughout his career. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, his quick wit, and his intelligence. Roy was also a huge Arkansas Razorback fan, and enjoyed attending college football games, when he had the opportunity. He will be forever missed by his family and friends, and the many people whose lives he touched.
A graveside service with military honors will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2020, at 1:00pm, at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home, 8801 Mansfield Rd., Shreveport, LA, 71108. Following will be a celebration of life and a reception at the Louisiana State Fairgrounds, in the Agriculture Building, at 3701 Hudson Avenue, Shreveport, LA 71109.
