IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Robert Grayson
Spillers
August 27, 1941 – December 26, 2024
Robert Grayson Spillers, 83, passed away on December 26, 2024, after a brief illness. He was born on August 27, 1941, in Winnfield, Louisiana. In 1949, Grayson and his family moved to Shreveport, Louisiana. The youngest of three, having two older sisters who he loved dearly, he attended Fair Park School and graduated in 1959. During that time, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Grayson attended Northwestern State University for three years before joining the Air Force. He later graduated from LSU in Alexandria, Louisiana.
In 1967, Grayson began his 30-year successful career with IBM, working in Shreveport, Dallas/ Fort Worth, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and finally settling in Palo Alto, California in 1974. While at IBM, Bob (as he was known by his extended family, close friends and peers)
worked in sales, administration, finance, legal, research and development, and as the Director of the Advanced Technology Division. He specialized in linguistics and language processing and also worked with the government. Along the way, he received numerous awards for his
hard work and dedication to IBM. After retiring in 1997, Bob had a consulting business for many years.
While working at IBM, Bob met the love of his life, Nadine Carol Hoffer. They married in the summer of 1980 and honeymooned in Maui, Hawaii. Bob and Nadine enjoyed raising their pet Dalmatians Sky Dog, Eartha, Pilot and Greta along with their cats Gray Man, Ike and Mamie.
They loved spending time with Nadine's parents and family, especially Christmas time in Woodside, California. Their extended family included their good friends, many who they met working at IBM, along with their godchildren who meant the world to them. Sadly, Bob's and
Nadine's life together was cut short when Nadine passed away from complications of ovarian
cancer in 1995. Those memories were always dear to Bob and he loved sharing their love story
with others.
Grayson enjoyed taking pictures, sharing a nice bottle of wine while engaging in long conversations with family and friends on many interesting topics, playing and teaching chess, and reading. He was also a sports fan and enjoyed watching college football and Nadine's favorite NFL team, the San Francisco 49ers.
In 2021, Grayson returned to Shreveport to oversee and help care for his sister, Kathleen, who had ALS. He made sure she had everything she needed including caregivers to help her. They enjoyed this special time together until she passed in January of this year.
Grayson is preceded in death by his wife, Nadine Carol Spillers; his parents, Grady Grayson Spillers and Bessie Lou Stroud Spillers; his sisters, Betty Spillers Mathews and Kathleen Spillers Smith; his father-in-law, Nathaniel Hoffer; mother-in-law, Norma Hoffer; brothers-in-law, James Mathews and Harold Gene Smith.
He is survived by his niece, Wendy Smith Anderson; nephews, Ronald Mathews, Richard Mathews and Michael Mathews along with several great nieces and nephews. Also, he is survived by Nadine's brother, Neil Hoffer and his wife, Donna Hoffer, and his niece, Taylor Nadine Simpson.
