Obituary

ROBERT A. BOOTH, JR., ESQUIRE

Robert A. Booth, Jr. (Bob) was born on December 8, 1939 in Bryan, Texas to Robert and Mildred Carrington Booth and passed away Friday, May 21, 2021 at his home in Shreveport.  He was preceded in death by his only sibling, Barbara. He was married to Mary Jean Young, the mother of his children, and then to Virginia Booth, who passed away in 2014.   Bob graduated from Byrd High School in 1957.  He attended LSU School of Law, from which he graduated, having earned a Bachelor of Law degree on August 16, 1963.  He then proudly served his country in the Coast Guard where he was called to guard the casket of President Kennedy.  He was honorably discharged on March 17, 1964 and then returned to Shreveport where he practiced law for over fifty (50) years.  Bob was a true adventurer. As a child, he enjoyed trips all across the United States and Canada, and his love of travel extended into adulthood and later into his role as a father.  He often spoke of places such as Boston, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., France, Italy and England. He told of days navigating San Francisco; roaming around different museums and parks as a teenager. He told of his later travels overseas including a spontaneous flight to his beloved city of Paris after just 4 days of deliberation.  Bob often showed friends pictures of various landmarks and told the personal anecdotes and history that went with each.  He enjoyed taking his own young children on mini adventures exploring country roads, fishing, and crawfishing. He flew them to New York City,  Florida and California, always instilling a love of travel and history and adventure along the way.   Bob loved knowledge for the sake of knowledge and he read everything he could get his hands on from books and newspapers to internet articles. His encyclopedic knowledge of History, Geography and Literature often won him many games of trivial pursuit, and helped him match wits with about every Jeopardy contestant. His thirst for knowledge was never quenched. But despite his hours of studious solitude, he especially enjoyed his time with others and was often fond of "holding court" at the Summit on Youree Drive, owned by his good friend Jim Ledbetter.  Bob had a genuine appreciation for a good bourbon, long games of booray, and lots of bull sessions.  He was an engaging conversationalist and the fiercest of friends, keeping in touch with folks from Broadmoor and A. C. Steere and maintaining friendships with lots of his old classmates.  He enjoyed many Christmas and Thanksgiving celebrations at home with lots of family, but also loved to sit together in a quiet room and talk. Bob served as a Eucharistic Visitor for his church, St. Paul's Episcopal, where he met and befriended many people who were homebound.  He took his duties in that role very seriously and was a strong advocate for those folks, most of whom were elderly.   His genuine love for people made him perfect for that position.  Bob is survived by his three children: Christopher Booth and wife Anita, Virginia Cowan and husband Tim, and Mary Rolfs and husband Ned, as well as two step children:  Sue Dashielle and Lisa Haywood.  Grandchildren include Sara, Camryn and Tristin Booth; Joshua Rolfs; Ryan Cowan; Christen Haywood; Michael Sanchez; Nicholas and Lauren Dashielle; Madison Ellis; and Morgan Lobel, as well as eight great-grandchildren, and three nieces.  The family would also like to recognize a very dear and special friend to our father, Karla Stanford.  A memorial service will be held at St. Pauls Episcopal Church, 275 Southfield Road, Shreveport, LA. on June 5, 2021 at 2pm. Interment will be at the columbarium located at the church.
