Rachel Elaine Monahan was born January 3, 1945 in Jonesboro, Louisiana and passed peacefully into the bosom of her Lord on October 5, 2016 after a lengthy illness. Her father was an itinerant minister, so she lived in various locations in East Texas, finally settling in Lufkin, where she met her husband Frank. She earned a B.S. Degree in Social Work from Stephen F. Austin University, followed by a Pastoral Counseling Certification from the Sarasota Academy of Christian Counseling, and counseled numerous clients dealing with troubled relationships after they moved to Shreveport. She was a member of Church at Red River Non-denominational Church. Rachel was predeceased by her parents, Thomas T. Dykes and Ruby (Wright) Dykes, and a brother, David Leon Dykes. She is survived by her loving husband of 12 years Frank J. Monahan of Shreveport; Daughters Nila Bartley and husband Sherman of Lufkin, TX; Jennifer Graham and partner Melissa Schwab of Denver, CO; brother James Luther Dykes of Abilene TX; Sisters Rev. Shirley Fay Hickman of Edinburg, TX and Martha Lou Thomas of Lufkin. A celebration of Rachel's life will be held at Church at Red River on Monday October 10 at 6:30 pm. Burial without ceremony will be at the Veterans Cemetery in Keithville, LA. The family wishes to thank the Church at Red River Community for their prayers and support; the staff of Christus Highland 1 South, and St. Joseph Hospice for their tender loving care of our beloved Rachel.
