Obituary

Patricia (Pat) Hawley Birmingham passed away peacefully on June 17, 2018 at Aime' Comfort and Care in Shreveport Louisiana, after suffering a stroke.  Pat was the daughter of the late Donald Hawley (Gramps) and Ruth Eaton Hawley (Nana). She was born February 19, 1933 in St. Louis, Missouri.  She professed her faith in Jesus Christ at the age of 14 at the Methodist church in Barstow, California.  She was a graduate of Barstow High School.  She was a member of Grace Community Methodist Church on Ellerbe Road in Shreveport where she served on the Stephens Ministry Team.

Pat married James (Jim) Elvis Birmingham on April 3, 1951.  They had 3 sons, Jim, Steve and Terry.  She was preceded in death by her husband Jim in 1986, her sister Mary Lee Jamison Schmitt and her brother Howard Hawley.

Pat is survived by their first son Jim and his wife Brenda, their daughter Laura and her husband Matt Sands and sons Kyle and Ryan, their daughter Amanda and her husband BJ Schoggin and their son Braydon; their second son Steve and his wife Karen (KB), their daughter Jennifer and her husband Wade Stephens and their daughter Ella, their daughter Kara and her husband Rob Devinney and their sons Bo and James Thomas (JT); their third son Terry and his wife Connie, his daughter Tamara Beightol and her son Kaleb, his son Matt and his wife Megan and their daughter Evelyn, her son Tom Poston and his son Cole and his daughter Hanna, her son Tarriel Poston and his daughter Kayley and son Trevor, her son Travis and his son Travis (TJ).

Sometime after Jim and Pat moved from California to Shreveport, she fell in love with the art of quilting.  Pat had an idea or maybe a dream to form a quilting group to share and teach quilting.  Red River Quilters began as a group of friends kicking around the idea of forming a guild in the area.  These ladies were named Pat Birmingham, Louise Cooke, Thelma Green, Gloria Ingram, Alice Pearce and Pam Pelletier.  Pat located a meeting room at the Pierre-Bossier Mall, booked a meeting date, and started spreading the word through fabric stores, quilt shops, the Extension Homemakers and the local media.

March 8, 1983 was the big day.  That evening 42 ladies arrived to talk about quilts.  The next thing you knew, officers were elected (Pat Birmingham – President, Thelma Green – Vice President & Louise Cooke – Secretary) and the Barnwell Center was secured as a regular meeting place.  Red River Quilters was off and running!

Visitation will be Tuesday, June 19, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Aulds Funeral Home 7849 E. Kings Hwy.

Service will be Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at 10:00 AM at Grace Community Church 9400 Ellerbe Rd.

Internment will be at Summer Grove Baptist Church Cemetery at the south east corner of Mansfield Rd and W Bert Kouns Industrial Loop.
