Obituary

Nancy Wells Black passed away peacefully on December 3, 2017 in Shreveport, La.  Nancy was born on September 5, 1935 in Fort Smith, Arkansas, the youngest of four children and the only girl.  After high school, Nancy made her home in Shreveport, LA.  It was while Nancy was working as a secretary at a CPA firm in Shreveport that she met her future husband. Her wit and beauty captivated Tom Black, and after a few month courtship, Tom and Nancy married on August 15, 1959.

Nancy enjoyed travelling the world with Tom's work, with trips to Scotland, Egypt, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, and more.  After raising children in Shreveport, Tom and Nancy moved to Anchorage, Alaska. In Alaska, Nancy enjoyed the natural beauty, hiking, fishing and visits of the neighborhood moose in her backyard. She worked in a law office and at both BP and Arco, where she made many friends and shared many adventures.

Nancy was a member of the social and cultural society, Beta Sigma Phi, and a member of the Magnolia Chapter 27 of Eastern Star.  She loved music, dancing, sports, attending Cowboy games, and playing tennis. She joined Kings Highway Christian Church when she and Tom were married, and continued to keep up with the church through the church paper while living in Alaska. In 2003, Nancy and Tom returned to Shreveport to be closer to their granddaughters in Dallas, rekindle old friendships, and resume regular attendance at her church.

Nancy was known by her friends as "the best friend ever". She had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh and make others laugh too.  Friends describe her as "a real hoot!", "the life of the party", and "a great travel companion".  One friend said, "I started to tell Nancy a joke and just a few words into it, Nancy said, 'let me tell you how that joke goes' and told it better than I had heard it the first time; we laughed so hard!  Another called to say, "Remember the good times we had.  They were long ago and now we are far apart, but you are always uppermost in my mind".  When Nancy was a girl in Fort Smith, she and her best childhood friend, Martha, would scrape together a couple of pennies so they could buy an ice cream cone for the little girl down the street, just so they could hear her say "tanilla"

Nancy is survived by her husband of 58 years, Thomas K. Black Jr., her sons; David and Tom Black, III (Monique), and two granddaughters; Audrey and Meredith Black.  She is also survived by nieces; Linda Weirick and her husband Mike, Jane Randall and her fiancé Ted Rockwell, niece-in-law Diane Wells, nephews John Wells and his wife Mary Carol, Clayborn Wells and his wife Keely, Tom Wells, Brian Wells, Grandniece Amanda Weber and her husband Matt, and grandnephew Rev. Jason Wells and his wife Courtney.  Nancy is also survived by her loving lap companion, Baxter.

Nancy is predeceased by her three brothers; John, Rodney, and Donnell Wells, and her sister-in-law, Ila Wells, her nephew, John Wells, Jr and her grandniece, Jennifer Wells.

Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, December 20th at 11:00 AM in the Sanctuary, followed by a reception in the Family Life Center at Kings Highway Christian Church, 806 Kings Highway in Shreveport.
