Mary Jean Young, 84 yrs, of Shreveport, LA passed away on February 25, 2026 after a prolonged period of declining health.
Jean was born on January 27, 1942 in New Orleans and was adopted, along with her twin sister Joan, to Marion Young Jr. and Charlotte Brandau of Abbeville, LA. Jean had an idyllic life growing up in a large colonial home along the Vermillion Bayou, where she water skied and boated, rode horses, played sports, and enjoyed a leisurely southern life. Jean attended Abbeville Elementary and later graduated from Abbeville High School. She went on to study a wide range of subjects at LSU in Baton Rouge, The University of Mississippi for Women, and the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg.
After graduating with a degree in Speech Pathology, she started her first job at Curtis Elementary School in Bossier City, kickstarting a number of years as a Speech Pathologist.
In 1961, Jean met Robert A Booth Jr. in Baton Rouge, LA. They married on July 25, 1964 and went on to have 3 children: Christopher Lee Booth, Virginia Elizabeth Cowan, and Mary Catherine Rolfs.
Jean was predeceased by her mother, her father, and her twin sister Virginia Joan Collins. She is survived by all three of her children as well as her much beloved cousins Virginia Margrete Vause, and John Christian Hansen.
Jean was a quiet, sweet natured woman with a charming laugh who ended every goodbye to her children with “sugar” or “sweetheart”. She was the mother that painted with oils, gardened, and cooked the best meals. She played organ and sang Silent Night throughout the year. She took her children camping and loved fishing. She was a mother who had so much love to give that it saddened her that she was unable to give more. Jean went through many difficult hardships in life. Her children were privileged to be there along the way and help carry some of her burdens. We loved you more than you ever knew mom.
