MARY SHAW MITCHELL

May 22, 1947-March 3, 2024

Mary Shaw Mitchell, 76, of Shreveport, passed away March 3, 2024. A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, March 16, at 11:00 a.m. at Broadmoor United Methodist Church with visitation one hour prior to the service.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Terry Mitchell; daughter, Tracy Young; son-in-law Marty Young; and grandchildren, Kacy and Ally Young.

Mary was born May 22, 1947, and attended school in Bossier Parish. After graduating from Bossier High School, she went on to receive a Bachelor of Science from Northwestern State University Natchitoches, and a Masters of Health Sciences from Louisiana State University Health Science Center.

Mary married the love of her life Terry in August of 1970, and they had one daughter, Tracy, born in 1975.  Mary enjoyed traveling and shopping with her family.  Every year for 40 years they went to Dallas for Black Friday weekend shopping.  Something she looked forward to every year.  When the granddaughters were born, everyone else took a backseat.  She loved them more than life itself and would do anything for them and took them anywhere they wanted to go.  Even took them on separate vacations because they enjoyed different sites.  She could not wait until Christmas every year to give them the gifts she searched all year to find.

During her career, Mary was a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality and a licensed clinical laboratory scientist. She worked 23 years as a Medical Laboratory Scientist at the VA Medical Center and 10 years at Barksdale Air Force Base Medical Treatment Facility.

After retiring the first time, she went back to work at Barksdale as Director of Quality Services for another eight years. She was an Assistant Professor at LSU Health Sciences, Department of Clinical Laboratory Science for three years. She was active in the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science where she was a delegate and Omicron Sigma Award winner for several years.

Mary served as the Louisiana Society for Clinical Laboratory Science registration chair for the bi-state meeting held in Shreveport. She was LSCLA President 1998-1999 and received the LSCLA Member of the Year Award in 2001. Also, Mary received the regional level of Member of the Year Award from Omicron Sigma in 1998 and 1999. She received the state level of this award in 2001, 2010 and 2011.

For 30 years, Mary was an active member and a Board member of the Red River Quilters. She was also a member of Sew and Sews, Thread Benders Tributaries, Fraid Knots, and Lake Group Quilt Retreat groups, which she attended multiple times each year.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Broadmoor United Methodist Church library in Mary's honor.
