Mary Helen Dickens was born on October 30, 1939, in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Erven Taylor and Mabel Louise Taylor-Allen. She was the eldest of seven children and was known as a devoted wife, loving mother, and gifted educator.

From a youthful age, Mary embraced Christianity, a foundation that would remain central throughout her life. She began her educational journey within the Caddo Parish School System, where she developed a passion for learning and a strong commitment to academic excellence. Her steadfast devotion to her faith, family, community, and education shaped her values and influenced every decision she made. This unwavering dedication served as a guiding force, illuminating her path and inspiring others.

Mary earned her undergraduate degree from Grambling State University and her master’s degree in education from Northwestern State University of Louisiana. Mary maintained a strong commitment to service as a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., embodying its principles of sisterhood, scholarship, and service. This led to her further commitment to educating and inspiring students for more than forty years.

Mary shared more than forty-five years of devoted marriage with her husband, Reverend Henry Dickens, built on mutual commitment and faith. Together, they raised four children: Henry Blaine, Meredith Patranese, Hewitt Blair, and Herven Brent. She was also strengthened by the love and companionship of James Lane, Glenda George, Marlene Washington, and Cynthia Dickens.

Blessed with extraordinary musical and singling talent, Mary began playing for Shreveport area churches at the age of thirteen. She faithfully served as Minister of Music at Greater St. David Missionary Baptist Church, where her husband pastored. Her beautiful spirit and musical gifts enriched the worship experience for all.

Mary, a beloved mother, devoted wife, exceptional educator, and faithful servant, entered eternal rest peacefully on Monday, December 8, 2025, at the age of 86.
