Obituary

Linda, a cherished beacon of love and wisdom, passed away unexpectedly on August 21, 2026, at the age of 82. Born on June 18, 1944, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Linda was the beloved daughter of James P. Smith and Darwin Mitchell, who predeceased her. She was also preceded in death by her ex-husband, Justin Kidd.

Linda's life was a tapestry woven with diverse experiences and talents. She earned a bachelor's of science in mathematics—a testament to her sharp mind and dedication. Her early career saw her working on the R1 computer at Rice University, a role she held with pride. However, her greatest commitment was to her family, as she chose to become a full-time mother to her beloved children: Julia, Helen, James, and Grace. Her nurturing spirit extended beyond her family, as she shared her love for learning with young minds as an early childhood Montessori teacher.

Later, Linda found her calling in numbers once more, working as a bookkeeper and tax preparer for decades, and even serving as a census worker. Her professional life was marked by integrity and a meticulous attention to detail.

Linda's personal life was rich with passions and pursuits. A lover of folk dancing, she brought joy and rhythm to many gatherings. Her musical talent was evident in her piano playing and her remarkable perfect pitch. Linda was an avid reader, with a particular fondness for histories and biographies, which reflected her deep curiosity about the world and its people.

Her love for animals was unconditional, and she could often be found striking up conversations with strangers, her warmth and kindness drawing people to her naturally. Linda's open heart and engaging spirit left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Linda is survived by her devoted sister, Carol, her cherished children, and her treasured grandchildren: Steven, Donovan, Casey, and Eli. Her legacy of love continues through her five great-grandchildren, who will grow up hearing stories of her remarkable life.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice that supports education or animal welfare, causes close to Linda’s heart.

Linda's memory will forever be a source of strength and inspiration to her family and friends, who will miss her dearly but will carry her spirit forward in their hearts.
