Kathleen Elizabeth Spillers Smith, 87, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2024 after battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) for several years. She was born on December 8, 1936 in Winnfield, Louisiana. In 1949, Kathleen and her family moved to Shreveport where she attended Linwood Junior High and graduated from Fairpark High School in 1955. After graduation, Kathleen married David Reeves and had two daughters, Pamela and Karen. In 1969, Kathleen married Harold Smith and had their daughter, Wendy.
Working most her of life, Kathleen's first job was at Mitchell's Drug Store. She was 13 at the time, but told the owner she was 16 to get the job. She also worked for Palais Royal, Western Electric, was a notary public and an expert at short hand. Later, she worked with Harold in their family construction business as well as running her own cabinet shop. Her last job was with Mental Health Solutions, where she retired at 83. Kathleen loved her family. Especially her grandchildren who affectionately called her Mama Kat. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and enjoyed attending Sunday school. Kathleen was fond of fashion, especially clothes, and was never seen without wearing her high heels and jewelry. She loved tanning by the pool, driving her convertible Mercedes, her weekly trips to the beauty parlor and getting manicures and pedicures. Kathleen also loved to dance and could always throw a good party. "Mamo" enjoyed the many adventures she had with Harold traveling to the Shrine Director's Association conventions, New Orleans for Mardi Gras, family reunions and beach trips.
Kathleen is preceded in death by her parents, Grady Grayson Spillers and Bessie Lou Stroud Spillers; her sister, Betty Jean Matthews; her husband, Harold Gene Smith; her daughters, Pamela Daniel, Karen Harley and Dana Harper.
She is survived by her brother, Robert Grayson Spillers; her daughters, Wendy Anderson (Kevin), Laura Gooszen (Michael) and Lila Noble (Mark); her grandchildren, Amanda Holt, Candace Holloway (Harry), Rachael Wright (Tim), Nicholas Anderson, Sarah Anderson, Colin Harper (Christina), Madeline Klingensmith (William), Anna Claire Cook, John Michael Gooszen, Patrick Gooszen and eight great grandchildren.
A funeral service honoring Kathleen will be held on Friday, February 2, 2024, at 10:30 am at Aulds Funeral Home on 7849 East Kings Highway. Visitation will begin at 9:30 am prior to the service. A graveside service will be held at 12:30 pm at Northwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Keithville, LA.
Honoring Kathleen as pallbearers will be Kevin Anderson, Nicholas Anderson, Tim Wright, Colin Harper, John Michael Gooszen, Michael Matthews, Michael Gooszen, and Mark Noble.
The family would like to thank Christy McDaniel and Linda Johnson for taking care of Kathleen.In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the ALS Association, the Shriners Children's Hospital or the charity of your choice.
