Funeral services for Joseph Norris Long Sr., age 93 of Greenwood, LA, will be held at Frierson Baptist Church in Frierson, LA on Saturday May 9, 2026, at 12:00 P.M. A visitation will be held before the funeral at 11:00 A.M. at the church. Officiating the services will Brother Mel Campbell.

Joseph was born on July 8, 1932, in Curry community near Winnfield, LA, to the late John and Josie Long, and passed away on Sunday May 3, 2026 at Overton Brooks VA Hospital, Shreveport, LA.

Joseph was a resident of Greenwood, LA for 47 years. He served his country in the United States Army for 2 years during the Korean War. He retired from General Motors after 19 years of service. He enjoyed welding, fabricating, playing his guitar, playing pool, and anything to do with maintaining his yard. He had a passion for gardening and eating hot peppers.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years Maurine Fowler Long;three sisters, Yvonne Atkins, Annie Sasser, and Vera Wells; one brother, JW Long; nephews, Orville and Johhnie; grandson, Alan James.

He is survived by one daughter, Kathie and husband Shawn James; two sons, Joseph Long Jr. and Gary Long and fiancé Patricia Miller; grandchildren, Ryan Long, Brandi and husband Eric Lane, Christopher and wife Megan Long, Christina and husband Joey Mead, and Stephen and wife Courtney James; eleven great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild.

The family wishes to extend a debt of gratitude to Rhonda Dixon for her devoted attention and selfless compassion given to Joseph and Maurine over the last 8 years and to the medical team on the 7th floor at Overton Brook VA Hospital for their excellent care and hospitality.

Services to be held at Frierson Baptist Church, 299 East Street Frierson LA 71027, on Saturday May 9, 2026 at 12 PM.
