James Alfred Pike was born on October 15, 1935, at home in Claiborne Parish to James Henry and Ollie Choate Pike. He was the 13th of 14 children. His father was a share-cropper and his mother a homemaker. His dad died when he was 10 years old. His mother kept the family together by them raising their own food and the boys doing odd jobs in the community to pay for their clothes.
Alf graduated from Athens High School in 1954 and went on to UL Lafayette where he worked his way through college. He graduated with a BS in Business Administration in 1958. He served 6 ½ years in the Army during the Berlin Crisis and the Cuban Missile Crisis. During this time, he married Peggy Robinson of the Arizona Community in 1961. They have four sons and now have eleven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
He retired from Pennzoil Products Company in 1992 after 32 years. At this time former Sheriff, J. R. Oakes, asked him to serve in attaining data to organize the 911 system. He also did volunteer work with the Claiborne Parish Sheriff's office under Sheriff Volentine for two years before going on as a part time deputy and served from February 1995 to May 2002. He was coordinator of the TRIAD of Claiborne when he began the Senior Calling Program and was S.A.L.T. Council, Senior Volunteer from 1995 to 2001.
He was elected as Constable in 2nd Justice of the Peace Court in November 1996 and served for 17 years. During this time, he attended 16 Justice of the Peace and Constable Workshops sponsored by the Louisiana Attorney General's Office.
Alf loved to serve others and his community. He was a member of Family First coalition of Claiborne Parish 1998, Advisory Board Member of Local Law Enforcement Block Grant 1999 to 2000 (attaining two grants $12,000 each for communication equipment), actively participated in Coordinating and Development Corporation Meetings for Northwest LA 2000 to 2001. He was a member of the Homer Lions Club since 1998 and served as secretary from 1999 to 2001.
He was past treasurer and board member of Atlas Employees Federal Credit Union from 1989 to 2000, past president of Central Claiborne Water System, past treasurer of the Gideons International Claiborne Camp, former volunteer fireman, certified first responder with Claiborne Parish Fire District #6 from 1994 to 2011, former captain of the Arizona Station, past vice president from 1987 to 2001 and from May 2001 to May 2022 was president of Forest Grove Cemetery Association. He was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church in Homer.
Alf truly had a love for God's word and memorizing it. For example, he memorized the entire first chapter of the Book of John. May we all have a desire to memorize scripture just like Alf.
Alf went to his heavenly home on Wednesday, October 11, 2023. A memorial service was held on Sunday, October 15 which would have been his 88th birthday. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Peggy; four sons, Greg and wife, Darlene, of Hinesville, GA; Jeff and wife, Kelly, of Homer, LA; Doug and wife, Kristi, of Homer, LA; and Chet Pike of Camden, AR; eleven grandchildren, Austin, Matthew, Justin, Michael, Elizabeth, Cole and wife, Allee, Allison, Julie, Reagan, Chris, and America, and great-grand daughter, Rylie.
