Obituary

Shreveport – Jacob Fisher went to be with his Lord and Savior on February 14, 2022 after a courageous battle with cancer and Alzheimer's disease.  He was born on April 22, 1925 in Wichita Falls, TX to Hiram Herbert Fisher and Mary Elizabeth Shultz Fisher.

Jacob enlisted in the U.S. Navy on March 24, 1943 where he went to boot camp and hospital corps school in Farragut, ID.  He served during WWII and was involved in the invasions of Kiska, Tarawa, Marshall Islands, and Saipan & Tinian in the Marianas Islands.  During this time, he served as a Pharmacist's Mate 1 st Class.  After WWII, he graduated from Centenary College in Shreveport, LA and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.  He became an ordained minister and was commissioned in the U.S. Navy as an officer and chaplain.  He also served during the Korean War and Cuban Missile Crisis.  He served for a total of 28 years in the U.S. Navy and retired at the rank of Lt. Commander.  Jacob then created the chaplain program at LSU Medical Center in Shreveport, LA and served as the Director of Pastoral Care.  He taught and mentored many students over the years as they would spend their summers learning how to become a hospital chaplain.  He retired from LSUMC after 25 years.

Jacob is survived by his daughter Kelli Fisher Matthews (Andy), granddaughter Stephani Matthews Fox, grandsons Joshua R. Matthews and Andrew J. Matthews, great grandchildren Hunter Glass, Grayson Matthews, Natalie Matthews, Isabelle Matthews, and Jaxon Matthews, daughter-in-law Lori Seward, Ph.D., sister-in-law Janet Cooksey Fisher and numerous nieces, nephews, and stepson Bob Creamer.  He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 53 years Nell Davidson Fisher, his sons Michael D. Fisher, Ph.D. and Jeffrey P. Fisher, two brothers Samuel A. Fisher and Hiram H. Fisher, Jr. and two sisters Mary E. Fisher Curtis and Nell S. Fisher Elston, and his second wife, Adelaide Boggs Creamer.

Jacob wanted to thank his caretakers and staff at the Chateaus at Montclair, especially Roxanne and Kim, and also to Southern Care Hospice.  Jacob wanted to give special thanks to his sitter and buddy of 9 years, Callie Mandigo.

Jacob will be laid to rest at Northwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Keithville, LA.
