IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Harry "Mac"
Rushing
September 13, 1953 – July 15, 2022
Harry McKenzie (Mac) Rushing, the son of Hollie and Mary Belle Rushing, was born September 13, 1953, in Homer, LA, and joined our Savior on July 15, 2022. Mac grew up in Bellaire, TX, and attended Bellaire High School but spent every summer in Homer, LA, with close relatives.
Mac was a top recruited quarterback by southern colleges for running the wishbone offense for Bellaire High School. After graduating high school, Mac attended LSU on a football scholarship for a year, then transferred to the University of Houston where he earned a degree in accounting. He earned his CPA and worked for various companies in Houston for 12 years. There, he met the love of his life, Karen, and they married in 1988.
Regardless of his success as an accountant, Mac said "to heck with corporate America," and he and Karen moved to his favorite place, Homer, LA. Mac picked up a chainsaw and began logging. That led to him buying a sawmill and a wood kiln and starting his own business as a manufacturer of custom wood products and flooring.
In his younger years, Mac developed a passion for fishing and quail and pheasant hunting. Many of his favorite memories were of his hunting trips with his father, close friends, and family. He enjoyed sharing this passion with his wife, daughters, and sons-in-law. One of his biggest joys in life was training his many bird dogs. Mac had a soft spot in his heart for lost animals and never turned away a stray dog or cat.
His favorite pastimes were working in his half-acre garden or spending time at the family tree farm. He really enjoyed cooking for his family, especially using the produce he grew. He could make a mean fried chicken, hot water cornbread, barbecued chicken and brisket.
Mac adored his seven grandchildren, and he made it his mission to instill his faith, morals, and love of country into their hearts and minds. Anyone who knew Mac knew he loved to talk, and his favorite topics were American history and his faith in God. Whether it was a stranger on the street or an acquaintance in the grocery store, Mac was quick to share, most passionately, his thoughts and beliefs.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 34 years, Karen Coleman Rushing; two daughters, Gina Rushing McGrury and husband Sam of Sneads Ferry, NC, and Anna Belle Fox and husband Norman of Homer, LA; seven grandchildren, Cora Belle McGrury, Norman Peter Fox IV, McKenzie (Mac) Arthur McGrury, Avalyn Mae Fox, Magnolia Marie McGrury, Connor Dawson McGrury, Henry Wayne Fox; one sister, Sarah Rushing Benson and husband Matt of Houston, TX; and a vast circle of family and friends.
A memorial service will be held for Harry McKenzie (Mac) Rushing on Saturday, August 6 th , at 10:00 am at the First Baptist Church in Homer, LA. Visitation will be held from 9:00-10:00 am.
