Gerald Lew Slusher, 81, passed away on October 29, 2019 in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Gerald was born on March 17, 1938 to William J. Slusher and Millie (Wisener) Slusher. He graduated from Northwestern State University and the Defense Language Institute, the Department of Defense's school for culturally based foreign language education and training. He served two tours with the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Gerald spoke Mandarin Chinese and Spanish fluently and served the United States Armed Forces as an interpreter before working for the United States Army Corps of Engineers. He retired as Director of Human Resources, Southwestern Division. Gerald is included in the Gallery of Distinguished Civilian Employees Fort Worth District.
Above all, Gerald was a mentor. He volunteered as a longtime ESL instructor and stayed in touch with many of his students as they built new lives in the US. He was a beloved member of his brother Gene's family, helping to guide his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, godchildren, and dear family friends right up until the end of his life. He kept in touch with his and Gene's cousins as their families grew, keeping the extended family informed of all that was going on in each other's lives. He was also a faithful servant of Our Lord, volunteering as a Lector at St. Mary's Chapel in Schumpert Hospital until its closing. He assured us daily that we were all in his prayers, and we will miss our "Unc" dearly.
Gerald is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Eugene Tilden Slusher. He is survived by his sister-in-law Mary Jane (Wright) Slusher, nephew Stephen; nephew Kevin, his wife Liz, and children Jason and Garret; niece Mary Kay, her husband Chris, and children Katie (husband Kevin), Stephen, Emily (husband Adam and daughter Harper), and Jon Michael; nephew Vince, his wife Courtney, and children Sarah Jane (husband Bobby), Riley, Ainsley, and Emma; nephew Jaime, his wife Tonya, and children Nicholas and Ben.
The family would like to thank Dr. Del Mundo as well as Jamaal Stevens and his service Companion Care for taking such good care of our uncle.
