Elvin Ray
Chapman
Sep 20, 1954 — Aug 15, 2026
ELVIN RAY CHAPMAN, affectionately known as Ray, age 71, of Shreveport, Louisiana, passed away on Saturday, August 15, 2026.
Ray was born on September 20, 1954, in Tacoma, Washington. At the age of 16, he moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, and attended Abramson High School. After high school, he moved to Slidell, LA where he planted roots and became a permanent resident.
He is survived by his loving wife, Suzanne Bagby Chapman; his three daughters, Janell Kahl (Nathaniel), Lauren Chapman (TK), and Ashley Wingerter (Jared); and his seven grandchildren, Cody Kahl (Morgan), Caroline Brunson (Caleb), Kade Chapman, AJ Slates, Addyson Wingerter, Alexa Wingerter, and Jase Wingerter. He was also blessed with three great-grandchildren, Adrian Smith, Raelynn Kahl, and Dallas Brunson.
Ray was the son of the late Clarence Elvin Chapman and Loretta Mae Fernandez Stumpf. He is also survived by his siblings, Connie Tidwell (Steve), Keith Chapman (Nancy), and Bob Chapman (Kelly). He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Kellett Chapman; his beloved grandson, Kannan Ray Slates; and his stepmother, Maxine Egbert.
Ray spent 38 years as a long-haul truck driver, traveling countless miles and building friendships along the way. Throughout his years on the road, he became known to many by his CB handle, “Little Indian.” Truck driving was more than a career for Ray; it became an important part of the life he built and the stories he carried with him.
When he wasn’t on the road, Ray enjoyed the things that made him happiest. He had a lifelong passion for motorcycles and loved watching old Westerns. Those who knew Ray will remember not only the things he loved, but the unmistakable personality he brought with him wherever he went.
Ray leaves behind a family connected by countless memories and a legacy that will continue through his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His life was measured not simply in years, but in miles traveled, roads explored, stories told, and the people he loved along the way.
Though his absence will be deeply felt, the memories of Ray and the many stories collected over a lifetime will continue to be shared by those who knew and loved him.
A Celebration of Life will be announced by the family.
