Obituary

Edna was born at the home of her grandparents in the Allen Community of Copiah County, MS to Loyd R. and Ora Berniece Magee on November 5, 1934. Edna was an only child and enjoyed music lessons and especially playing the piano. While attending Hazlehurst High School she also took up baton twirling. After graduating, she attend Copiah Lincoln Junior College where she became a member of the famous Co-Lin Collettes. Dalton "D.D." Smith was born July 5, 1934 in Natchez, MS to John Dudley and Lura Elizabeth Arnold Smith. He was the second of four brothers all of which enjoyed participating in any sports pickup game they could find. While attending Natchez High School, D.D. was a standout player in football, which would lead him to Copiah Lincoln Junior College in Wesson, MS where he also became a star athlete and co-captain of the football team. It was at Co-Lin where the star football player and the head majorette first met. D.D. and Edna were married in Wesson, MS on March 27, 1954. After both graduated from Co-Lin, they moved to Monroe, LA where D.D. continued to play football and received his degrees in Geology and Petroleum Engineering at Northest Louisiana State University in 1956. After graduation, D.D. and Edna moved to Natchez, MS where he began his long oilfield career as an Engineer for McCullough Tool Company and Edna worked in the Sears Credit Department. A year later, D.D. was employed as a Drilling Engineer for Chevron Corporation where he worked for many yeasr. Over his storied 40+ year career in the "Oil Patch", he also worked for the Louisiana Land and Exploration Co. (LL&E), Callon Petroleum, Davis Oil Company and retired with Arkla Exploration in Shreveport, LA. During their years together, Edna also worked to help out but was mostly content to be a housewife, Mom and Keeper of the home front. For the last twenty years, D.D. and Edna lived in Benton, LA at their home on Black Bayou Lake. Edna, unable to overcome a brief illness, passed away at Willis Knighton Medical Center in Bossier City, LA on April 28, 2008. She was cremated at Auld's Crematory in Shreveport, LA. D.D., while undergoing dialysis treatments, died peacefully while taking a nap in his favorite recliner at his Benton home on the morning of August 18, 2008. He was also cremqted at Auld's Crematory in Shreveport, LA. D.D. and Edna are survived by their two sons and a daughter-in-law, Rusty and Jackie Smith of Lilburn, GA and their youngest son, Alan E. Smith of Benton, LA. D.D. and Edna also had 4 grandchildren. D.D. is also survived by his two younger brothers, Rex Smith of Cleveland, MS and his youngest brother and sister-in-law, Donnie and Lib Smith of Brookhaven, MS.
