IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dwane Orel
"Ick" Smith
March 4, 1935 – July 19, 2025
Staff Sergeant Dwane Orel "Ick" Smith passed away peacefully at home on July 19, 2025, in Longstreet, Louisiana. He was 90 years old.
Born on March 4, 1935 as a twin, in Castor, Louisiana, Dwane was the son of William F. Smith and Eva D. Bates Smith. He graduated from C. E. Byrd High School in 1955 and went on to serve his country with distinction in the United States Army from June 1957 to June 1963, where he achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant (SSGT E-6). His military service was marked by dedication and a strong sense of duty—principles that remained central throughout his life.
Dwane shared a long and loving marriage with his wife, Margaret Watkins Smith, until her passing in 2016. Together they raised four children: Donna Gail Smith; Patricia Ann Smith Wray and her husband Chris; Debra Sue Smith Davis; and their late son, Randy Dwane Smith. He also mourned the loss of his son-in-law, Daniel A. Davis. In 1998 Dwane and Margaret fulfilled a lifelong dream of living on their 10 acres of land in Longstreet.
He is fondly remembered by his siblings: Freddie M. Gandy; Wayne O. "Bick" Smith, twin, and wife Cecile; Nancy F. Brazziell; Robert R. "Bobby" Smith; and William R. "Bill" Smith and wife Grace. He was preceded in death by siblings George L. Smith, Wildon F. Smith, Mildred Y. Rogers, Jewel D. Smith, Clifford F. Smith, Donald S. Smith, and Ronnie W. Smith.
Dwane found fulfillment in the quiet joys of life—gardening under the Louisiana sun, canning the fruits and vegetables of his labor, and spending peaceful moments outdoors surrounded by nature's beauty. These simple pleasures reflected his deep appreciation for life and his desire to share its blessings with others.
Dwane was known for his loyal nature and giving spirit. Those who knew him often spoke of his servant heart—a quality that defined both his personal relationships and his approach to life. He found joy in simple acts of care and generosity.
Known for his servant heart, Dwane was a compassionate caregiver who offered support and kindness to those around him with humility and grace. He never wanted anyone to leave his house empty handed.

As we remember Dwane's life and legacy, we are guided by the words of Scripture that brought him comfort:
Isaiah 40:31 – "But they that wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary, and they shall walk and not faint. Lean on God in the storm. Wait on him in the valley, seek him in the dark, his strength will carry you thru what you can't do alone."
Philippians 3:20 – "But our citizenship is in heaven, And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ."
2 Timothy 4:7 – "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."
May his memory bring peace to all who knew him and may his legacy continue to inspire love, service, and faithfulness for generations to come.
