Obituary

Desdemona (Mona) Frances Chapin Freeman, 91, passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 28, 2021, at Riverview Care Center in Bossier City, shortly after the discovery of metastatic cancer.  She was born in Brownsville, Texas on September 9, 1930, the daughter of Staley Chapin and Frances (Hofheinz) Chapin.  She was predeceased by both parents at an early age and ultimately raised by her maternal grandparents, Paulus Abraham Hofheinz and Viola Denton (Dobbins) Hofheinz.  She was also predeceased by the love of her life, husband Robert R. Freeman after 51 years of marriage and their son Robert S. Freeman.  Mona is survived by their two daughters, Melanie Frances Freeman Winkler and Tammy Louise Freeman Verrette, and by her grandsons and great grandchildren, Robert T. Freeman (Mandy), Adelyn and Danielle; Bruce Verrette, Jr. (Sarah), Aidan and Alyssa; Jason Verrette (Remy), Kayla, Scarlett and Aubrie; and Joshua Verrette (Amber), Bailey and Sawyer.

Mona lived a very full life as a teacher and homemaker.  And while that may seem very tame and traditional, she was also a model, worked for a private investigator, was an active civic leader, belonged to the NRA, was an accomplished seamstress and fiber artist (designing many of her own clothes, writing several magazine articles on artistic sewing techniques, and teaching advanced sewing techniques), was an avid reader and could discuss almost any subject with almost anybody, and was involved in many aspects of her church including belonging the Order of the Daughters of the King.

A service will be held on Saturday, November 13, 2021, at 2:00 pm at St. James Episcopal Church, 2050 W. Bert Kouns Industrial Loop, Shreveport, LA.  It will be led by Father James Yazell.  Interment of ashes will be in the church columbarium with a reception following in the church parish hall.  Anyone wishing to remember Mona in a special way can make gifts in her memory to St. James Episcopal Church.
