Carl Kennon Williams, Jr., 94, passed from this life to life eternal with his Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, December 8, 2015, peacefully, with his beloved wife, Jackie, by
his side. Carl was born on October 2, 1921, in El Dorado, Arkansas, the son of Carl Kennon
Williams and Hattie Taber Williams. At age 2, he moved to Shreveport, Louisiana, which
became his lifelong home. As a child, Carl was an avid Boy Scout, and his artistic talents also
began to be developed. He wanted a Monopoly game, but money was scarce during the Great
Depression, so he used his artistic talents to make his own Monopoly game, including the playing
board, playing pieces, deeds, cards, etc. He was also a dedicated acolyte at St. Mark's Episcopal
Church, Shreveport (now Church of the Holy Cross), through high school.
Carl proudly served his country during World War II as a tailgunner in many bombing
missions over Europe. Flying in both B-17's and B-24's out of England, he distinguished himself
in defending his aircraft and crewmates against enemy fighters. The missions of his crew's
principal bomber, "Lady Lightnin", have been recorded in the annals of the war.
After the completion of his military service, Carl returned to Shreveport and attended art
school. While in art school, he met the love of his life, Jacquelyn Cureton. They were married
on July 29, 1948, and they celebrated their 67 th wedding anniversay in 2015.
Carl became a commercial artist (graphic designer) and practiced his craft until he retired.
He took great pride in his work and believed that a sign which could not be easily read was
useless. Carl was an accomplished artist for pleasure also, painting landscapes and carving
wooden sculptures.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Jacquelyn Cureton Williams, four children, Louise
Williams Smith (Ronald), Shreveport; Barbara Williams Shelton (Greg), Bossier City; Carl
Kennon Williams, III (Jackie), Knoxville, Tennessee; and Stephen Jerald Williams (Lajette),
Bossier City; 15 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
Carl was a dedicated follower of Jesus Christ and a faithful member of St. Paul's
Episcopal Church, Shreveport, for sixty years. During those years, he served in many capacities,
but he was best known for his warm, cheerful greeting of visitors and his coordination for many
years of the contemporary prayer and praise worship service on Friday nights.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 275
Southfield Road, Shreveport, Louisiana, on Saturday, December 12, 2015, at 11:00 a.m., with
interment in the Columbarium and a reception following at the church.
The family would like to express its love and appreciation for the faithful and loving care
provided to Carl at home by Roberta Purland.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Boy Scouts of America Troop 14, c/o
St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 275 Southfield Road, Shreveport, Louisiana 71105, or to the charity
of the donor's choice.
