Senior Chief Petty Officer Carl Travis McDonald (Retired US Navy), 86, died peacefully on December 9, 2023.
Carl was born on May 3, 1937, in Sarepta, Louisiana to Blanche Teague and Rome McDonald. He emerged from humble beginnings to leave an indelible mark on the lives of those around him. His journey was one of resilience, service, and a profound love for family, football, animals, and the great outdoors. In 1954, he joined the armed forces and served 21 years with distinction in the Navy. The discipline and patriotism he learned in the Navy never left him. His most notable assignments were the USS Bon Homme Richard, USS Elokomin, USS America, USS Tom Green County, USS Terrel County, USS Coral Sea, Naval Recruiting Station and Naval Support Activity. The Navy instilled in him the values of perseverance and a strong work ethic that would shape his character for a lifetime.
During his career he earned the following medals and awards: National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal; Meritorious Unit Co11¥11endation; Navy Unit Commendation; Combat Action Ribbon; and the Navy Achievement Medal with combat "V". He was discharged with full honors in 1975 and was an electrician on offshore rigs and power plants until retirement.
Carl was passionate about family, fishing, and football. As we bid farewell to a man who exemplified duty, courage, and compassion, let us remember Carl not with tears for his departure, but with gratitude for the impact he had on our lives. May he rest in eternal peace, his spirit forever sailing on calm waters, fishing rod in hand, surrounded by the love of cherished pets and the echoes of cheering LSU fans.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents and his son Byron. He is survived by Sherry, his wife of 40 years, stepson Gary Rex Human, stepdaughter Ginger (Lisa Rokusek) Human, his two grandchildren: Katie and Emily and one great-granddaughter. He also leaves behind many friends and colleagues.
