Obituary

Brent Clyde Reed, PhD was born on July 1, 1946, in Salt Lake City, Utah to the late Gladys Bowman Reed and Clyde Howard Reed. He graduated in 1964 from Los Alamos High School in New Mexico with honors and graduated with honors in 1968 from the University of Utah with a major in Chemistry. In the summer of 1968, the Vietnam War called, and he served as Lt.jg aboard the Kittyhawk aircraft carrier in the Combat Information Center for four years.  Based in San Diego, CA, he met Jeanne Marie Murphy at a party where fellow officers of the Kittyhawk were among the invitees.  It was love at first sight. After his second deployment in Vietnam, they married at Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in La Jolla, CA on September 16, 1972. Jeanne and Brent honeymooned up the California coast en route to what would become their first home in Utah. Brent entered the University of Utah as a graduate student in 1972 to concentrate his energies on seeking his PhD in Biochemistry and attained his doctoral status in 1976. With PhD in hand, Brent and Jeanne loaded up their Ryder truck rental in Salt Lake City and headed east to Johns Hopkins University. In 1978 Brent became the proud father of Jason. He had the best time with this new arrival and became an integral part of his life in every regard. Brent completed his four-year postdoctoral fellowship in 1980 at Johns Hopkins. In 1980 it was now time to seek his first job as a biochemist and after applying to several universities, he was accepted at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, TX. With a new baby and his wife in tow, and after 8 years at Southwestern Medical School, Brent went on to Shreveport, LA in 1988 where he established himself at LSU Health Sciences Center. He had a very successful career as an Associate Professor of Biochemistry for 34 years. He retired in 2021 but was still active in the Biochemistry department and always learning and pursuing his love of photography until his death.

Aside from his career, Brent was an accomplished photographer and photographic printer having pursued this passion throughout his life. His love of the outdoors and his family were always reflected in his artistic photographic views of nature and family.  He also loved tennis. He had many friends who he played with, and he and his wife regularly played at the LSU courts. He was a member of the Shreveport Art Club and entered many shows with his photography. Throughout his career, he always found time to be a great dad to Jason and loving and caring husband to Jeanne. In his down time, he loved watching foreign films and eating popcorn and always perched on his lap was his favorite cat, Joey. He is deeply missed by family and many friends.
