Audrey Sue Funke DeVries, "Sue", age 87, formerly of Chicago, Illinois and a resident of Shreveport, Louisiana for over 50 years, passed away Friday, July 15, 2022, at Spring Lake Nursing Facility in Shreveport after a brief illness. Her services and burial will be conducted privately for the family at Shady Grove Cemetery in Union Parish, Louisiana in the future.
Sue was born in Centralia, Illinois, on July 9, 1935, the only child of William R. and Nora N. Funke. She was a graduate of Farragut High School in Chicago, Illinois. On July 18, 1959 she married Arthur "Art" DeVries, the love of her life. A career transfer for Art facilitated a move to Shreveport in 1967. Sue attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Shreveport with her family for many years, settling at Noel Memorial United Methodist Church, when her kids became teenagers. Sue was a homemaker, wife and mother for her family for many years before joining J.C. Penney as a sales associate and then later was recruited to Penney's switchboard operator position in Bossier City. Her voice was often heard over the store's intercom as she made announcements and directed employees. Sue and Art later moved to Oil City, Louisiana, where Art concluded his career with Kansas City Southern Railroad and they both retired.
Sue is preceded in death by her husband Art DeVries, her son, John W. DeVries, and her parents, William and Nora Funke.
Sue is survived by her daughter, Noreen DeVries Kennedy (husband Mike), her daughter-in-law and extraordinary caregiver, Valerie DeVries (wife of John), her grandchildren, Hailey Kennedy Hann (husband Tyson), Jordan DeVries Diaz, and great grandson, Luca Diaz; numerous cousins, friends and family, including long-time "girlfriends" Judy Luchtenburg and Beverly Luchtenburg. Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Kennedy and Gary Kennedy.
The family would like to extend sincere appreciation to the staff and nurses of Spring Lake Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation and Regional Hospice Care Group for their attentive care.
